3 Disturbing Things To Consider Before Allowing Your Dog In The Water

With Summer right around the corner, it's time for you and your pooch to hit the water, but WAIT! Not so fast. Water is fun, but it can also be very hazardous to your pooch.

1- Drowning
Summer is usually related to relaxing by the pool or by the beach, and if you have a dog he's supposed to be a natural swimmer, many people believe the myth that all dogs swim. This is not only not true, but very dangerous. Now this isn't a major issue with athletic dogs, as most are naturally gifted with the ability to swim, but for certain breeds (i.e. English Bulldogs and French Bulldogs) it isn't the case. Always exercise caution when leaving your dog unattended near lakes, pools or the beach.

2- Ear Infections

Every dog experiences ear infections at least once in their lifetime. This is due to the fact that ear infections are usually associated with water, and can stem from grooming, bathing or swimming. Since water is something your dog will probably be in contact with in the summer, be sure to always dry your dogs ears as any liquid left inside will develop bacteria and this will lead to ear infections that if left untreated can really harm your dog. If you're unsure of how to properly clean your dogs ear, here is a short video on how to properly do it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99x64TF8ppU
3- Coat Infections

Many people bathe their dog thoroughly, but a lot of those people don't do as good a job at drying the dog afterwards. Using a towel is a good way to dry your dog, but not the most efficient. After the towel you should use a blow dryer and dry your pooch off with cold air (DO NOT DRY WITH HOT AIR). This will thoroughly dry your dog, and avoid coat and skin infections.
